2002 Mini Cooper lose all power when starting

I put key in ignition turn forward once I have power but turn it to start I lose all power no dash lights and no sounds the car just goes dead but power is restored when key is turned back to first position. Could this be ignition switch? Checked battery and its good and posts are clean.

Recheck the battery terminals (remove and clean) and check to make sure the ground to the engine block is clean and tight. It sounds like as soon as you place a heavy load on the battery, it is losing connection.
