There's play in the steering with sometimes a knocking sound and the steering wheel is now turned to the left when front wheels are straight. It feels like the car isn't going to correct it self when turning.

Time for an inspection at a tire and alignment shop. A shifting steering wheel is never a good sign, but it could be as simple as loose rack and pinion assembly mounting bolts. It could also be a lower ball joint about to separate leading to loss of control. Clunking and knocking are also something to never ignore.
