What would cause the engine to burn oil (2 quarts a week)?

My daughter is driving an Infiniti Q45. For about 3 months it is burning oil like crazy. The mechanic says he will have to take the engine apart to see why it is burning oil and then repair and put the engine back together. This will cost thousands of dollars. The car is not leaking oil.

If you have a lot of smoke a short while after start-up, the valve seals are bad and that is the main cause of engine oil consumption.
