When placing vehicle in gear a loud metal rattling sound is heard and the vehicle will not actual move in any gear

Check if either of the half shafts are spinning. If one is, the cv joint is broken. That isn't real common. What's more common is a broken pin in the differential which is part of the transmission. Usually that big pin backs out and catches on the housing, cracking it. That results in a big puddle of transmission fluid on the ground.
