I just bought a 2001 Toyota Camry and today I discovered it has a tapping/humming sound when the rpm is low(around 1500-2000 rpm). The natural engine sound takes up this noise for higher rpms, so it is not audible. I just replaced the timing belt and water pump, and the mechanic told me it is from the engine. It has 100k mileage. Could you please help?

There are many advantages we have with the internet and cyberspace, unfortunately the transmission to me of the sound the engine is making for you is not one of them, and it is not something I can comment on with any degree of accuracy. Not wanting to give bad advice, I recommend the sound be confirmed by a real person. It might be normal operation for all that you and I know.
