My car is running at around 20 mpg. I have taken it back to the dealership, who (in my opinion) are fobbing me off and saying that the age of the vehicle combined with the cost of fuel lead to consumption at this level. Could you please offer any advice/suggestions?

It could be a number of things. You can try some basic maintenance to see if it helps. New sparkplugs, new fuel filter and 02 sensors. Clean the intake manifold and new air filter. Check air pressure in tires. Good luck.
