My 2001 Xterra has a very high idle at times, hard shifting and now a gas smell.

The Xterra will idle very high at times while parked. When driving, it will shift very hard into the next gear and rev until you let off the gas.
Noticed yesterday, a strong gas smell near the rear right side of vehicle.
Had a mechanic "fix" what he said was the throttle plate that was sticking. That worked for awhile and the car stopped shifting hard and the idle was normal. Now it is back to doing the same thing. What do you think this could be and will it be expensive to fix?
Thanks!

Have you had the computer scanned for codes yet?

Not yet. But previously and on numerous occasions it has thrown the knock sensor code, but I was told that isn't too serious and that was a few repairs ago. I was wondering if it was 1. Misfire of spark plugs and/or 2. That throttle control thing.

With the high idle and shifting hard I would lean more to throttle input issue. Have the computer scanned for codes and let m know the exact code numbers not code descriptions.

Is that very expensive to repair if it has to do with that particular issue?

Since I don't know what the exact problem is I can't tell you if it will be a expensive repair or a hard repair since I don't know what's wrong with it yet.

Okay, here are the codes: 0325,1705,510,120,732,731. I looked them up and found a lot about the TPS-throttle sensor. Is that correct? Easy fix or not so much?
