There is a growling noise coming from my clutch when the pedal is not depressed. What could it be?

The clutch bearing (aka Release bearing or throw-out bearing).
Also a possibility, front transmission bearing.

Sounds like the throwout bearing is gone or an input shaft bearing-to find out you need to drop the transmission and further investigate

To "investigate further" you'll have to remove the transmission (transaxle).
