Started van this morning and smoke started rolling inside also loud clicking noise. Also been idling rough and will die.

NOt really sure was quick to fill up, later when it got light went out and opened hood and it did not smell like anything burning like the inside of the van does.

Did the smoke smell like something plastic burning, or could have been steam from coolant?

IT is really hard for me to diagnose it from here. Since there was that much smoke, it worries me to give advice not being there. If you can't see anything that is obveious, I recommend having it checked by an auto electric shop.
