2001 Ford Mustand 3.8L automatic transmisson recently would not start after normal performance without issues. The starter was working with a strong battery but the engine would not turn over.

First, I replaced the spark plugs and wires thinking the engine was not firing. They were very hard to work with in the tight space.

Second, I replaced the fuel pump and fuel filter because the new plugs and wires were not able to start the engine. Now the pump is very noticeable when I turn the car on and it starts!

Unforetunately, the start is weak and the idle is low and stalls out unless I constantly give it gas. There is a loud knocking in the muffler and in the engine. The engine is violently vibrating and gets very hot quickly. Also there is excessive condensation dripping from the exhaust which has dark soot in it that may be from the water dripping in the dirty tail pipe.

What I am hoping for is that a wire is loose after install causing the missing and hesitation in acceleration. Other than that I am at a loss. There were no indications to this sudden problem. Where do I go from here?

Start with checking for codes and pending codes, as this would take all the guess work out and pin point you to the troubled area

if problem worsen after the tune up check firing order

Check list :

check and clean IAC valve
check EGR
check cam sensor
Check exhaust back pressure and catalytic converter
