how do you remove the metal button from the rearview mirror of a 2001 ford explorer

If you are refering to the steel mount that is on the glass, chances are you will crack the glass removing it. If the mirror itself is the problem, there is a set screw (allen wrench) that holds it to the steel mount on the glass.
