Fuel Gauge Problem

I have a 2001 chevrolet monte carlo ss and my fuel gauge is not working properly it either reads full or empty how do I fix this?

Could be a problem with sending unit in the tank? There should be an access panel in the trunk. At the wiring for the fuel gage sending unit, for testing, you can use a resistor, between the purple wire and the black wire with white tracer, key on, see if gage reacts to resistor, if it does, I suspect a problem with sending unit in tank. Using a 40 ohm resistor, the gage should read empty. Using a 200 ohm resistor, the gage should read full.

Radioshack usually has resistors, don't cost much.
