Why would the car be at 2RPM when idle?

Today I noticed that my car was at 2RPM when I was stopped. The engine was a lot louder and seemed to be exerting more energy than usual. Stopped, it sounded like I was going 80 on the hwy. What could be the problem?

Throttle plate could be stuck partially open, iac valve could be bad, vacuum leak.

Is the check engine light on?
