My car is in excellent condition and just bought it three days ago. Suddenly after driving it a distance about seventy miles, as I was backing up from being parked at a McDonald's to leave, it started making a low "whining" noise that is worse when turning the steering wheel either way. What could this be? Hope not the power-train. Just my luck. Thanks

Does it do it if you turn the wheel while not moving? Is your power steering fluid level okay?

Yes, if I turn the steering wheel while sitting it makes that noise. Is there a specific type of power steering fluid I need to put in this car? I pray it is just low and suddenly doing this as I am very ill and cannot work anymore. I do not have the funds like I used to. It hums-grinds when driving but worse when have to make a turn i.E. A left or right onto a street or in my driveway off main road. Then it is very loud especially from steering wheel area. I am afraid it will lock on me when driving. Thanks so much for replying so promptly.

Fluid type is usually stated on cap and in owners manual. Definitely sounds like a pump problem. If low and you add fluid it may take a day or so to stop making noise completely. Of course, there is always the chance the pump is defective. Either on its own or because of running low too long.

I put steering fluid in and checked transmission fluid too which was fine. Knock on wood. Right after putting in fluid sound went away and running without noise. Keep fingers crossed. Thanks so much for your suggestions from your experience. I appreciate it. :-)

Now you might need to know why/where you lost/are losing the fluid in the first place?
