Recently the window seemed to come off track and began sliding down into the door. I managed to grip hold of it, and between holding it and operating the controls was able to get it into the closed position. But now I have no idea how to fix it.

Possibly the track has come loose inside the door frame and allowing the glass to slip, if the window will still move up and down with the switch, albeit with guidance by hand, I feel that this will be the problem, you will have to remove the door trim to view the track and see if this is the problem, if it has moved it will be fairly obvious.

You will need to remove door panel & replace the window track rollers [green in colour roller wheels] uses three of them but you may only need to replace only two, also while at it check at the bottom of the door if you see a track rubber for the glass, that rubber will stop the glass from rattling when closing the door & the window is down. Good luck.
