I have a feeling the fuel gage is in the gas tank and very expensive to fix right somtimes it bounces back and forth other times its stable when I know there is not a half of a tank etc could it be the floater or maybe something else.I dont want to have to drop the gas tank if I dont have to.

The sending unit is in the gas tank most likely the printed circuit board on the sending unit has failed. Its pretty common the fuel additives eat them up. You would need to measure the ohms readings of it when the gauge is bouncing around. Also any codes in the computer? They set codes sometimes when they fail.
