what is the function and location of the knock sensor? How does it affect performance?

The knock sensor is located under the intake manifold and the manifold has to be removed to change it. It's function is to sense when the engine experiences ignition ping so the PCM can compensate the ignition timing for that. https://www.2carpros.com/images/external/84997223.gif
