What could be wrong?

I have a 2000 nissan maxima. 1st I put $10 of gas in it when the gas was low and all of a sudden my tank is back to being empty after driving locally. Now it feels like it trembles. 2nd If I try to press the gas pedal all the way down the rpm goes up but the car doesnt accelerate like it suppose to, it barely gains speed.

If the engine speeds up normally but the car doesn't respond, that's a sign of a slipping transmission. Check the fluid level first. Whether it is low or not, driving it like that will seriously overheat and destroy what is left of the clutch plates leading to a costly rebuild. Time for a visit to a transmission specialty shop.
