hold down gas pedal

my car will only start if i put the pedal to floor an if i let off it dies

can you keep it running by holding gas pedal a little down? does black smoke come out exhaust when doing this or revving it?

yes it will run if i hold it a little down it runs no black smoke what do u think is wrong with it?
