Rps jump up but happens randomly

Hi I have a 98 540i bmw that I bought about 200 miles away from home ran great all the way home and the next day had a problem staying on, I reset the battery and the check engine light went off but it still died then I cranked it a few more times and now

It sounds like the clutch maybe slipping, if not.

Has the car been scanned? The car may not have been kept up. Try using some fuel system cleaner and some throttle body cleaner. Sometimes a little carbon can get in the throttle body and clog up the little air holes. Follow instructions on the can.

It has been scanned, the mechanic said it is the transmission and wants to charge me 1500 for a used tranny with a 2 yr warranty with 85k. Other option was 1000 for 85k with 6 month warranty

Only half of post showed up drove all right then rpms jumped up and happens randomly Look around on e-bay and under Mazda some places are cheaper and some have rebuilt. Make sure you check it out there reputation completly first. Just checked on e-bay they have ones that range from 350. To 600. Some with warantee. Did you buy it from a dealer if so there must have be some kind of guarantee

I'm going to check on ebay and see what I get. I just don't trust mechanics because I went to different places and they all say different things.
