Car overheating

My car (2000 hyundai tiburon) was overheating when my heater was off. When I had the heater on it was fine. But I turned it off and the car overheated bad and now the heater doenst even work. I changed the thermostat but that wasnt the problem. Advice would be greatly appreciated.

Did you check the coolant level in radiator prior to replacing the thermostat?
Do you have coolant losses issues?
Was system bled of air?
Are the cooling fans working correctly?
