2000 Hyundai Accent check engine light

MY Hyundai accent 2000model having 55000 km. So far no check engine light has come. They say that only with sesor in the key will have check engine ligt. Tell me whether my car have it?When went for scanning they told only if check engine light is there they can check it. Otherwise they cannot do that. Is it true?

Here is how it works. If there is a trouble code stored in the computer, the light will stay on and the tech will be able to retrieve the code. If there is no light on, they can't. HOWEVER, if the light is going on and then off, often times a code can be retrieved from memory.

Tks for the info. Is there provision in my car the check engine light. It never happened to me when my alternator, Map sensor etc went off
