There are a few sizes and locations of freeze plugs, larger ones on the side of the block, and smaller ones on heads. Some hard to get at, some impossible to get at without engine removal. Back side of engine between the flywheel and the block and back sides of the heads.

If the engine needs to be removed, or the trans-axle, usually done by raising the car, and lowering the cradle with engine and trans-axle, then separating them. Not a back yard job!
