There are a few sizes and locations of freeze plugs, larger ones on the side of the block, and smaller ones on heads. Some hard to get at, some impossible to get at without engine removal. Back side of engine between the flywheel and the block and back sides of the heads. Check out the diagrams (Below). Please let us know if you need anything else to get the problem fixed.

The trans-axle needs to be removed usually done by raising the car, and lowering the cradle with engine and trans-axle, then separating them. This video will walk you through the steps on a similar car the process is the same.

Engine Cooling problem
1996 Ford Taurus 6 cyl Front Wheel Drive Automatic

My car is linking anti freeze and gets hot when I go around the block. I was told that I need a shallow cup to keep it from linking. Is that what I need? What steps are there to get to the problem?

Hi there.

The first thing to do is get a cooling system pressure test done to determine the exact cause of the leak, these plugs don't often give problems, your mechanic can do this test in a few minuets, start here.
