how does the advance and retard work on this vehicle

the ranger will start and tick over,the fuel pump and injectors have been tested and are ok.the problem seems to be on the advance and retard so could you please tell me how that works,there seems to be a problem on the vacuum side of it.

Timing is advanced under acceleration.

in a vacuum retard system, it normally has vacuum (retarded) until throttle is operated and then vacuum is lowered/lost and allows timing mechanism to advance.
