My 2000 Dodge Caravan, 6-cylinder stopped while driving. The mechanic said the water pump had blown, damaging the timing belt, and causing a "bender". Repairs are 2500 to 3000 does this sound right?

That would be the case on any 3.0 engine except the 12valve SOHC which should be the engine you have. That particular engine is a NON-INTERFERENCE engine so it doesn't bend valves. You should be able to replace just the pump and belt.
