Do you mean heater core? Is yours leaking or plugged?

In answering your question, yes, the ac has to be evacuated. I would get a shop to recover it for you and then return to them to charge it when you are done.

Ive been replacing heater cores 20 years and I never evacuated the a/c. The a/c and heater work off different cores?
