Put in rebuilt trans and torque converter, it worked fine but after about 20 it miles it wouldnt go into go into drive it had just first, second, and third. Then they went out to, but it would still drive in reverse. The trans made grinding noises when the forward gears went out. Doesnt make any sounds in reverse. What part of the trans could be bad?

One of your clutch packs or one of the roller clutches. Take it back and have them fix it especially after 20 miles. It cold also be a valve body problem.

One thing I was concerned about was I didnt prefill the torque converter before assembly, but I heard you dont need to. Could this be what caused it?

No that doesn't matter, the oil getspumped into the converter first. Take it back to whoever rebuilt it and have them look at it again. Hard telling what is wrong
