All first starts have a two second engine grinding noise than any other starts afterwards produce no noise every time that day. Let the car sit for 2-3 hours and the noise will come back again. The longer the sit, the longer and louder the noise. Car runs perfectly other than that. My main question is: Does this have to be repaired? And if not repaired, can it cause catastrophic damage to my engine. Seems some people put up with the noise and I don't mind doing that. I have audio recordings of the sound it makes if that helps. Thanks

Can you please shoot a quick video with your phone so I can hear the noise? That way I can tell for sure what's going on. You can upload it here with your response. If the starter is not fully retracting when it is cold, it will make a grinding noise. I have the electric steering motor make a grinding noise as well which both of these problems cannot be let go.

Hi Ken,

Thank you for your response. I have audio recordings (using my phone) that I'm trying to attach but I keep getting this message: Filetype not allowed. I tried as a MP3, WAV and MPEG-4 file and none work. Any suggestions? Thanks
Regarding your Starter response: The grinding sound only happens on the very first start then it never happens again that day unless my car sits for 2-3 hours then it will grind again when starting.

Hi Ken, here are my cold start sounds. As mentioned, it only makes this sound after the first start of the day then it runs perfectly on every crank but letting it sit 2-3 hours it will make the sound again. Sounds like it might be coming from the passenger side of the engine possibly. Makes me wonder if oil draining off parts in engine is causing this sound?

Thanks for the videos, they help, what you are hearing is the timing chain that needs to be replaced and the timing chain tensioner also you may have a timing chain guide that is broken as well, here is how the job is done so you can see how to fix it or what needs to be done when you take it into a shop for repairs. I would also try fresh oil with a bottle of Lucas engine oil treatment if you want to try a patch. Check out the images (below). Please let us know what happens.

Hi Ken,

Thank you for your help. I was leaning toward a VTC gear replacement. I heard a spring inside of it wears out and either does or does not push a dowel out causing that sound?
Regarding the Lucas engine oil treatment, my oil was changed 3 months ago so, it is topped off. I can't add Lucas without draining some oil out first, correct?
I don't mind the noise b/c I drive once a week, but I do worry about the chain (or something else) breaking and causing catastrophic damage to my engine. Do you think that could occur? If the chain just brakes, I also don't mind towing it to repair shop, but I worry about major damage happening to it. What do you think?
Once oil is distributed across the engine, it never makes the grinding sound so, is there a start-up Oil Pump that spreads oil across the engine that isn't working?

You are welcome, I would check the screen I motioned because that can cause the problem, if thew chain breaks the engine will be no good because it will cause the valve to contact the pistons in most cases. Yes, you can add Lucas without draining any oil out. Please let me know how it goes.

Thanks Ken,

I don't know what 'screen' you are referring to?
There were a couple of Lucas products. I am assuming you mean for me to add "Lucas Oil Motor Treatment" (they also show oil stabilizers and stop leaks)
So, you are saying if my timing chain breaks, it would definitely destroy my engine? This is my biggest worry.
(I had a timing chain break on a 1984 Accord I had but it did not destroy my engine then, I just had it towed in to replace the chain.)

The Honda engine uses a timing belt, so it is a noninterference engine. This is not that way, and the engine will be hurt if the chain lets go. Sorry about the screen, I was thinking about another person's problem from another post. I would disassemble the engine to see if you have a broken chain guide or tensioner which will cause the noise in the video. They sell a timing chain kit which should have the components and gaskets you will need for the job.

Thanks Ken, I cannot do the job myself because I live in an apartment, but it sounds to me like you would definitely recommend that I get it into a mechanic ASAP to avoid certain engine damage. Am I correct?

Yes, I would take the car in to have the job done ASAP. If the timing chain let's go you will probably need a new engine.

Hi Ken,

Thank you for your help and comments. I repaired the problem which was the Engine Camshaft Timing Actuator $2,100.00 (at the tip of my cam shaft) = The Timings chains (2) were both good so left as is and the chain guides were good, too. I hope this helps you on future inquiries.
