I've 1999 volvo s40 but I would not start engine with check engine light and cross the car sign. Please kindly answer for me. Thanks.

The symbol you are describing sounds like you have an immobolizer issue. You would need to take it in to Volvo to see if you have a bad key or a bad VGLA? Either way programming of the new key or module would be required whatever it is that needs replacing?
