1999 VW automatic transmission Jetta

My 99 jetta will start and goes into drive but will only go like 2mph and the reverse is not working. Where andhow do you check the transmission fluid? I just bought this car and have already put alot of money into it in the last month. Help please!

It looks like a special scan tool is required.
Does the engine rev properly? If so, the transmission is slipping, as you suspect. If reverse is completely not working, then the transmission is shot and needs to be replaced. The forward gears aren't far behind in failing.
