My son's 1999 VW Jetta's check engine light went on and the car did not have much power. He drove on back roads to college for the remaining 30 minutes to get there after thanksgiving break and has not driven it since. Any ideas on the cause of loss of power?

When the CEL indicates, an error has been detected in the engine control system and you would need to retrieve the trouble code to find out what had gone wrong.

The trouble code should be related to the loss of performance.
