I believe the starter relay or motor is going out on my 1999 Toyota Avalon. Now there is now power to the car. I tried to jump start and when I hooked up the cables the car tried to crank over without the key even in the ignition. Where do I start?

Hello,

First locate starter relay, look at the numbers on it. Then look at the other relays around it match up the numbers. Then swap out the relays (REMEMBERING WHICH RELAY WAS SWITCHED). Then try jumping again if doesn't turn over when cables are hooked up replace relay.

When I hooked up the cables the car tried to crank over without the key even in the ignition.

Could also be the ignition switch failing-

Thanks for the response. Why would the car try to turn over when I hooked up the cables to jump it?

When the car did not start before if I moved the shifter it would crank over.

If the relay was stuck closed the it would continually send power to starter till battery died.

If Ignition switch is going bad then it could also send continuous power till battery dies.
