1999 Oldsmobile Alero Running hot

My car only runs hot when its still. I just had the water pump replaced. When I was the drive thru the other day it ran hot on me and I had to pull over for a while but I made it home. Water came out when I tried to put more in but I ha vent drove it since Sat and water is still in it. I let it run everyday though. I just drove around the block and to the store and it was ok but I saw a little smoke from the hood. So I'm thinking its the thermostat at least that's what I'm hoping for. Do you know what it could be?

Thermostste will usually run hot all at once an dstay there. Have coolant system pressure checked it may be a h ead/intake gasket or check for cold spots on radiator when hot. If you feel any it's bad.
