Have a mazda protoge 1999. Car runs fine then down shifts and over drive light comes on and flashes. Then foot is alll the way down on the accelerator, may be going 5 miles and hour. Because at the same time the odometer goes to ). When suddenly kicks in car shifts and speed works. What is wrong?

It sounds like the trans is putting it into a limp mode. What you need to do is take the vehicle to a trans shop and have them scan the computer. Since the light comes on, there will be a code that identifies where the problem is coming from.
