1999 Jeep Grand Cherokee No Start condition 99

No start condition, cranks good, NO fuel or volt gage reading when key is turned on. ASD relay buzzing with key on. Humming sound from fuel tank ( not a clicking like I would think) Bad key light on.

Issue started with over heating condition. Mechanic said head or head casket bad. Paid them over $1100.00 to replace head and head gasket. They then said water pump bad. Refused to let them replace water pump for another $240.00.

They returned car to me on wrecker after they said car ran out of gas and battery was dead.

Changed water pump myself. Did not try to start engine until water pump was replaced. Charged battery and added 5 gal fuel. Now have issue with no start.

Have checked and replaced all fuss's I could find. Have check KPS and CPS. Have unplugged and cleaned all plugins I can find.

Please help am 63 yr old and disabled with limited money and poor fiscal shape.

If it cranks good but will not start, have a helper crank it while you visually check for spark at the spark plugs. If you have spark everywhere, check proper fuel pressure.

Your ASD relay supplies voltage to several systems. If no spark, check primary voltage to coil and fuel injectors, engine cranking. That voltage usually comes from ASD relay. I am not saying the relay is faulty, I would have to check voltage and ground circuit for relay. The computer should ground the relay if it has the proper signal from cam and crank sensors.

Can you check for applicable codes?

You may be able to get some codes on your digital odometer by cycling the ignition switch from acc to off, three times. Then watch the read-out on digital odometer. See if anything shows up.

Okay, went back and checked KPS. Checked good again.

No, I do not have a code reader. Have tried the three on/off trick with key but no code comes up.

Now for the checking the spark. This thing has a rail type thing for the plugs that bolt down. Had to remove this to replace with new plugs yesterday. How do you go about checking plug firing on this type system? Is the ignition coils built into this rail? If so how do I check it?

One other thing I tried. Before I signed up on this page I left the key turned on with battery connected. Battery voltage before 12.75 volts about an hour later battery voltage dropped to 10.3 volts. Buzzing on ASD had stopped and could not hear any sound from fuel tank as before. Put charger on it and ASD and fuel pump sound came back. Have a really heavy current draw some where to cause this. Any ideas?

I am going to unplug connection to fuel pump at the fuel tank and see if current draw goes away.

You can take wiring connector loose from coil rail. Check for voltage on dark green wire with orange tracer, engine cranking. If nothing there, then you do not have to worry about spark, there will not be any. That wire carries primary voltage to the coil. Note the diagram.

If no voltage that would lead us back to ASD relay and checking circuits for the relay.

Tried to check voltage but battery had been drawn down too low. Had to put back on charger. Battery is new. Bought 26th of January. Had it back to Advance Auto and checked out. Checked good. Like I said before have a serious current draw somewhere.

By the way: fuel pump is unplugged and still have the current draw. Has to be somewhere in the main bus, PCM or else where. Everything seems to point back to ASD circuit.

Swapped ASD relay with other identical relay and still got the buzzing relay. Kind of like a relay race on some electronic equipment I have worked on years and years ago.

As far as battery drain, check the amp draw. I have not looked up your exact spec, usually around 30--50ma, .030--.050, not even a tenth of an amp. If too much amp draw, you pull/replace fuses one at a times, when you pull the fuse on the problem circuit, the excess drain returns to normal. Sometimes a faulty alternator can also cause a drain.

To add, on the other issue, the computer grounds the ASD relay. I would have to check that ground circuit. Could be wiring or computer has a problem.

Just got a borrowed a OBD II scanner from Advance auto. Showing "Link error" Turn key off for ten seconds and back on and press read. Still shows same message. Link Error. What next?

If you cannot communicate with computer, I suspect something going on with computer. Can you have the computer tested? I cannot do that from here.
