In the middle of a long highway drive last night, my Check Gages light came on and the battery gage went to the minimum of 9.

Driving and lights not effected at all. No stalling or hesitation when I arrived home and was driving at street speed.

Started without a fuss this morning with battery gage back at 14.
I drove a few miles. On the return drive this morning the bat gage went back to 9.

novice would apprectiate a starting point in understanding this.

You're having an intermittent problem with the charging system. You need to have some testing done while the problem is present to determine if it's an alternator or PCM problem.

More than likely a failing voltage regulator, but as Wrenchteck says, this will have to be checked while the problem is present, although a charge test under load may show up a under charging condition.

This vehicle doesn't have an independent voltage regulator. That job is performed by the PCM so a bad voltage regulator means new computer.
