The gear shift lever on my truck has become rather sloopy and now I have a hard time getting it ito park. A mechanic saidi it wasn't my transmission but a problem in the steering coloum. Can you give me an answer as to what is wrong and how to fix it

My Ford Ranger 2000 had similar problem. I replaced the 2 plastic bushing on upper shift levr(about $10.00) and that snugged up shiift lever, but still had problem putting it in park. I finall found that there are 2 screws that hold botton part of shift lever to cable connecting transmission. These screws were about 1/4 inch loose and I tightened them with a star bit screwdriver. Now have corrected my problem as it shiofts into park correctly as well as all other gears.
