My service engine soon light came on what would cause this?

That's like asking why I'm in pain. A diagnostic fault code will be memorized in the Engine Computer. Having the code(s) read is the place to start. They will get you to the circuit or system with the problem, not necessarily the defective part. Many auto parts stores will read those code for you for free. There are hundreds of them.
