I have a 99 escortzx2 that had been driving decent enough, when the timing belt broke I have been working on it to replace the belt, and imagine my surprise when I saw that the plug wires were wrong! Someone had #1 plug wire going to#3 on coil, #2 wire was going to#1 coil and#3 plug wire was going to#2 on the coil #4 was the only one correct, how did it even run and will it be ok if I put the plug wires in correct locations?

Because it's not a typical system it's a dis system and when two cylinders are aligned like 1 & 3 it will fire anyhow to run it. Also it 's the same coil that fires both cylinders. So it will.
