I have a 1999 contour. While driving down the highway the battery light came on pulled over to check and light went out. 117k mi. I think alternator is going. Serpentine belt is ok. Anything else?

If charging light is coming on then it is a good sign of a failing alternator. Most local auto part stores check charging systems for free.
