I lost first, second and reverse gears in my manual trans. On my 1999 chevy cavalier. What could be wrong?

So it wont shift into those gears only?Did your shiftet get loose?I would check the cable ends make sure they are attached to the transmission and at the inside shifter.

Cables are attached. When I shift into the gears it make a grinding noise.

It makes the noise after I shift and release the clutch

You need to look for a rebuilt or a scrapyard trans. You have internal part failure.

Yeah it sounds like you have some synconizers on those gears the best bet is like the candieman said find a good used transmission.

What sucks is youll need a new pressure plate, throw out bearing and cluch plate. Your missin some teeth on those gears.I would drain the fluid and check for metal parts in the oil.
