1998 Chevy Cavalier wont go in reverse

Its my sisters car but she says she got in it and she started driving and she heard a snaping noise and her abs light turned on. She drove it to her boy friends house and it wouldent move in reverse, her boyfriend said he smelled something burning but I never did.

So it will go in forward but not reverse? Was the fluid checked? If so what color is it, does the fluid smell burned? It should be a nice red/wine looking color and not have a burn smell. Get back with me with these answers I will try to get you going in the right direction.

I cheacked and the were all fine. I dident smell anything out of the ordanary

Try to put the vehicle in the lowest gear if it doesn't move then I suspect the low and reverse clutch pack is gone the transaxle will have to be rebuilt. Has any work been done to the vehicle lately? That may be related to this incident.
