What would cause an engine to pump gas out exhaust?

Replaced fuel pressure regulator, and checked for injector leaks. The motor hydro-locks off of the amount of fluid in the cylinder.

You have a open injector that is leaking fuel into the intake.

You need to find out which one but you may end up replacing them all from age and dirt in the fuel rail.

After you repair it, put a little oil in the spark plug holes to get some lubrication back in the cylinders.
