Tim,
Do you live in the north or south? Binding linkage is a frequent issue for those living in the salt belt. It sounds like the shift linkage has simply frozen in place from lack of movement. Crawling under the vehicle, soak the shift pivot and linkage connection with a good quality penetrating oil ( PB Blaster works well). Do this daily for a few days and attempt to engage the lever. If you do not get any movement after 4-5 days, it will take heat to free it up.
