1998 Fiat Punto Faulty Gearbox

Hi there, Ive found out that my engine on my car is misfiring and that I have a faulty gearbox and it refuses to change from gear 1. I took it back to where I brought it from and they said to change the spark plugs, the coil and the ht lead and apparently that will fix my gearbox too. But my dads friend who is a mechanic said he is certain its the gearbox itself and changing the other bits wont work on my gearbox. Whats your opinion?

Id tend to agree but its somewhat possible that your gearbox is speed sensitive. Does it not come out of first gear or just not go into any other gear? Try shifting the trans through all the gears with the car off and also running sitting still. If its hard or impossible to shift then you probably have a mechanical problem in the trans. Id agree also with the misfire fix especially if they've never been changed
