I just did a head gasket job on this truck, and had to replace one head, all torque specs are on the money and the valves have been adjusted, the engine turns but won't start, only backfires, timing is set on TDC1 what am I missing?

The piston can be at top dead center either on the compression stroke or on valve overlap. Remove the plug, hand crank the motor till you feel a little pressure when the piston comes up to be sure it is on the compression stroke.
