Toyota 1997 Troopcarrier, I have a question about engine oil pressure, I have noticed that recently the pressure has been up and down, particularly during a 4wd trip over the wknd where at idle rpm the pressure was lower than the acceptable level on the dash gauge panel, however increasing the rpm brings the pressure back within limits, the oil and engine was at normal operating temperature during this time. When the engine is cold the oil pressur will sit within limits at idle due to the cold oil. I am 95% positive that the pressure was constant at all rpm speeds prior to this. The oil pressure transducer checks out OK. I am wondering what could control this pressure after the pump or is it just the pump? How hard is it to work on the pump? I guess it is inside the engine somewhere? Any ideas or advice would be much appreciated.

Regards,

Jamie

Check the oil pressure with a mechanical gauge, if normal replace the oil pressure switch. If abnormal could mean oil pump and engine bearing.

Remove the oil filler cap and check for excessive sludge build-up. If there is, most probably the oil pump strainer is partially clogged.

Happens to most Toyota engines when sludge builds up. Oil treatment expedites the process.

You would need to remove the oil pan to get at the strainer.
