1997 Pontiac Grand Am GT 2.4L Twin Cam 16 Valve DOHC with a 2001 2.4L Twin Cam 16 Valve DOHC engine in it with original 1997 wire harness and computer. I have a check engine light on for a knock sensor and EGR Insufficient Flow. My question is, what do I need to look for as far as the EGR Insufficient Flow goes? Do I need to replace the EGR Valve, clogs, cracks? If it is clogs or cracks what areas and parts do I need to check? I know when I turn the car off I hear like a pressurized sound leaking. Hard to explain the sound exactly though. I know it is coming from the driver side of the engine, somewhat around the EGR but not sure if it is the EGR. Please if you can help let me know. Thank you.

Also, one small question off topic here, what would cause my car to top out at 4000rpm at idle? It use to go to about 6000rpm at idle then top out but after changing the top motor mount it went to 4000rpm. Any ideas?

So when it top's out at 4,000 rpms what does it do cut's out?Sound's like the rev limter kicking.I don't see why the rev limter would change from 6,000 rpms to 4,000 rpms just from changing the upper mount make's no sense. AS far as your egr valve insufficient flow you have a stuck closed egr valve or clogged egr port two most likely cause's. Here's what I would try remove egr valve start engine you should hear loud exhaust leak and engine should start to race. Only run it like that a few second's.

Any idea of what that sound I hear when I turn the car off could be? What could cause the rev limiter to change?

I don't know why the rev limiter would change it's in the computer programing so unless it's changed by changing the program it shouldn't change.6,000 rpms sound's high for the rev limiter 4,000 rpm's sound's a lot more normal.I have no idea about that noise since I wasn't there to here it. You didn't have the a/c on did you? Also try what I asked with the egr and get to me with what you find.

Ok, the noise I heard was the fan. As far as the egr goes, I got another egr and the metal hose that goes from the egr to the manifold and put them both on. The original doesnt seem to be in bad shape or anything though. If its not the egr or that hose clogged what else could it be?

You would have to clear the port's the best way is with a good soaking with carbon cleaner and a frayed speedometer cable and a drill.

Would I have to take the manifold off to clean it? That is the part I really dont want to do. So far everything seems good with the egr but still waiting on the check engine light to come back on for the knock sensor to see if the egr comes up again.

If you use the carbon cleaner and the frayed speedometer cable you usually don't have to remove the manifold. The best way to see if the port is clogged is the way I told you to check it.

2001 2.4 cylinder head was not drilled for egr. That is your cause. The knock sensor is different also. Engine Block year different for 1997 and 01
