1997 Mercedes Benz C180 Automatic, stuck in first gear

Gears selection OK for Parking, Reverse, neutral - but will only run in first gear, cannot select and run in 2nd, 3rd or fourth gear.
I use cruise settings and all settings there are OK.
Is there a method of forcing basic settings?
[car is right hand drive, English, - I am 87 and I am in good working OK!]

Sounds like an internal problem with the valve body or electrics, this should really be checked over first hand by a trained transmission specialist, I would go get a first hand opinion as some hands on testing will be required to work out the exact fault.
