Stopping running when jumper cables are removed is normal since the battery is run down. If it's really dead, it will take a good 15 minutes to START taking a charge, but the generator will keep the engine running if it's working.

Start by checking the fuses. There will be a blue 15 amp fuse for this circuit. You can also measure the voltages on the smaller wires that plug into the side / rear of the generator. The yellow wire must have 12 volts all the time. The green / red wire should have around 2.0 volts with the ignition switch turned on, AND the "Battery" light on the dash should be on. Once the engine is running, the voltage on that green / red wire should go to around 14.0 volts and the dash light should turn off.

When the charging system is working you'll find half of battery voltage, (around 7.0 volts), on the white wire. If those voltages are okay, measure the voltage on the fat output wire. The voltage there must always be exactly the same as battery voltage regardless if the engine is running or stopped.
